Smartphone-Based Interventions to Reduce Sedentary Behavior and Promote Physical Activity Using Integrated Dynamic Models: Systematic Review

Abstract: Background Traditional psychological theories are inadequate to fully leverage the potential of smartphones and improve the effectiveness of physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior (SB) change interventions. Future interventions need to consider dynamic models taken from other disciplines, such as engineering (eg, control systems). Just-in-time intervention methods, which leverage mobile technologies (i.e., mobile apps, activity trackers) to track and then intervene on sedentary behavior at the right time, have increasingly emerged in recent years on the premise that time and event-based recommendations may constitute a more successful intervention approach (39)(40)(41)(42).
