SmartAccess: Attribute-Based Access Control System for Medical Records Based on Smart Contracts

Abstract: Cross-organisation data sharing is challenging because all the involved organisations must agree on 'how' and 'why' the data is processed. Due to a lack of transparency, the organisations need to trust that others comply with the agreements and regulations. We propose to exploit blockchain and smart contracts technologies to define an Attribute-Based Access Control System for cross-organisation medical records sharing, coined SmartAccess. SmartAccess offers joint agreement over access policies and dynamic acce… Show more

“…They have proposed three different methods for managing Electronic Health Records [4]. According to Marcela Tuler De Oliviera [5], for the cross-organization data sharing there must be transparency and trust in the organization. Smart Access provides joint agreement for getting access to the policies and provide a dynamic control over the transparency and auditability [5].…”

“…A prominent law is the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) 1 , in force throughout the European Union (EU), which establishes guidelines on storing and processing personal data in the EU [9]. The GDPR emphasizes the importance of protecting the fundamental rights and freedoms of individuals in the handling of their data [10]. It has inspired other countries 2 to adopt similar guidelines, such as the Lei Geral de Proteção de Dados (LGPD) in Brazil, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) in the United States, and the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) in Canada.…”

“…Smart contracts are self-executing agreements encoded on a blockchain that auto-matically execute predefined actions when specific conditions are met [10], [17]. Smart contracts thus can play a crucial role in IoT access control systems by providing a decentralized and automated mechanism to manage permissions and enforce policies [18], [19].…”
