Co-designing with children is a recent challenge to the development of new products. Children and designers can express ideas through rough drawings, also called "sketches", but, while drawings are common activities, children can also display lack of confidence or engagement during this task. To motivate children before creating sketches, we considered the administration of group games. This paper tested the effects of different group games on participants' impressions and outcomes in subsequent design sketch tasks. Two studies were performed. In study 1, higher game difficulty was associated with negative impressions and less detailed drawings. By controlling difficulty, in study 2 we found that games positively affected children's confidence with their sketches, which indicated to affect design submissions. Results indicated an immediate effect of games on children's design sketch impressions and outcomes. If negative associations are properly controlled, games can be viable motivators for co-design tasks with children.

Tutkimuksessa selvitetään esikouluikäisten lasten suhdetta nykyajan verkottuneisiin älyleluihin. Olemme erityisen kiinnostuneita Lelujen Internetiin liittyvästä opetuksellisista arvoista, opetuksellisesta sisällöstä ja niillä tapahtuvasta leikistä, jonka kautta leikkivälineet on mahdollista nähdä osana suomalaisessa esikouluympäristössä tapahtuvaa varhaiskasvatusta. Lelujen Internetin kanssa toimiessaan lasten on ajateltu oppivan eri asioita niin lelujen fyysisiä kuin etenkin niiden digitaalisia käyttömahdollisuuksia hyödyntäen. Tutkimuksemme selvittää yhtäältä, millaisia monimediaalisia leikin muotoja Lelujen Internetiin kytkeytyvät leluhahmot tukevat ja toisaalta, millaisia oppimisen mahdollisuuksia niihin sisältyy. Yksi tapaustutkimuksemme päätavoitteista on tarkastella, millaisia oppimislupauksia leluvalmistajat lelujen internetiin liittävät ja toisaalta, miten nämä lupaukset täyttyvät lasten käyttäessä leluhahmoja osana leikkiään. Tutkimukseemme sisältyy kolme osa-aluetta: leluvalmistajien antamat lupaukset lelujen opetuksellisista ominaisuuksista, esikouluikäisten lasten vanhempien ja opettajien asenteet teknologisia ominaisuuksia sisältäviä älyleluja kohtaan ja esikouluikäisten lasten oma näkemys näiden lelujen sisältämästä opetuksellisesta potentiaalista. Lähestymistapamme on monitieteinen ja eri menetelmiin perustuva. Tutkimuksemme käsittää kolme eri aineistoa. Se sisältää Lelujen Internetiin lukemiemme hahmolelujen opetuksellisten ominaisuuksien kartoituksen lelunvalmistajien näkökulmasta, esikouluikäisten lasten vanhempien ja esikouluryhmän kahden opettajan lomaketutkimushaastattelut ja kahdenkymmenen esikouluikäisen lapsen kanssa tehdyt ryhmähaastattelut esikouluympäristössä suoritetuista lelutestaustilanteista. Tutkimuksessa kysymme, mihin opetustarpeisiin tarkastelemamme lelut vastaavat ja millä tavoin ne sopivat osaksi suomalaisessa esikouluopetuksessa käytettyä muodollisen mutta leikin kautta toteutuvan oppimisen ympäristöä. Tutkimuksemme osoittaa, miten lelut sopivat leikillisen oppimisen välineiksi, kun esikouluopettajat ottavat nämä leikkivälineet osaksi suunniteltua ja ohjattua opetusta.

A toy is an item mainly intended for children to play with. However, due to its important role in child development, it has evolved to encompass sophisticated educational and learning characteristics. Toy industry has evolved to provide these needs as digital interactive smart toys. Interactive toys combine traditional toys with additional computing capabilities using software and hardware components. This paper presents the design and development of an interactive toy system named "Basma" which interacts with a child in Arabic language. The system consists of two parts: The first one is a plush toy with a hardware component that is implemented using a low cost Internet of Things (IoT) kit. This part leverages the interaction between the child and the toy, allowing the toy to respond and talk. The second part is an iPad application connected to the toy via Bluetooth. It allows parents to customize the toy and provides the child with stories that embed moral and cultural values. The interactive toy system was evaluated using test scenarios and user acceptance.
