Smart polymeric coatings—recent advances

Abstract: There is an ever-growing number of developments that aim to bring novel functionalities to polymer-coating systems with nanotechnology being one of them. This article will cover recent advances in the field of smart polymeric structures that are used in protective coatings in terms of stimulus and response, sensing mechanisms, and current or potential applications. Such structures are commonly based on polymers modified through organic or inorganic additives. Emphasis is placed on smart sensors used for detect… Show more

“…Thus, in the case of corrosion protective coatings, the term ''self-healing'' can be interpreted in different ways. [10,11] The classical understanding of self-healing is based on the complete recovery of the functionalities of the coating due to a real healing of the defect based on the recovery of the coating integrity. However, the main function of anticorrosion coatings is the protection of an underlying metallic substrate against an environment-induced corrosion attack.…”

“…pentaerythritol(3-mercaptopropionate)), self-healing takes place in two ways depending on the location in the crack in which damage occurred. Figure 2 [17] illustrates the differences between self-repairing taking place at the crack interface and the one taking place in the bulk area of the crack. Maleimides can react with the residual amines present in the epoxy matrix (they are used as hardeners) or with thiols [16].…”

“…The ease of modification stems from the various properties of macromolecular compounds, such as oxidizing properties, swelling and cross-linking ability, and from the fact that no high temperatures are required to form them. The smart functionality can be based on functional additives (corrosion inhibitors) or the polymeric structure [17]. In the literature, one can find descriptions of coatings composed of…”
