Medical adherence is a major concern globally and is increasing with improved access to medication. Unfortunately, patients taking multiple medications often struggle with confusion about when and how to take each medication. To address this issue, an inexpensive domestic device has been proposed to improve medication adherence. This device uses Wi-Fi and cellular Internet of Things (IoT) integration to dispense medication at the prescribed times, making it suitable for use in both home and long-term care settings. The device also includes a web interface that allows users to control the device and make changes to dosage and other related information. Additionally, the device features an intricate system for sorting pills to ensure accurate and efficient medication delivery. Automating medication taking through this device can improve patient adherence and overall health outcomes, which could significantly impact public health and quality of life for patients struggling with medication adherence.

An automatic system in equipment can be recognized as a systematic control system to minimize human tasks or automatically complete repetitive tasks without human involvement. This review paper focused on the dispensing machines in the medical field particularly the design development of the automated dispensing machines which can be considered as one of the important technologies in pharmacy. This paper also briefly describes the main criteria for fabricating the dispensing machine. Next, different fabrication methods of the dispensing machine such as simple fabrication and 3D printing as well as the materials used in 3D printing are also thoroughly discussed. The last section consisted of the evaluation methods to justify the developed devices by comparing the performance of fabricated products and also through surveys and feedback from patients and medical staff. Based on the performance evaluation of automated dispensing machines as reported in the literature, it can be concluded that the implementation of an automated dispensing machine is necessary for the high-quality guarantee of community healthcare.

As medication adherence represents a critical challenge in healthcare, pill and medication dispensers have gained increasing attention as potential solutions to promote adherence and improve patient outcomes. Following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses) methodology, we carried out a systematic literature review on papers indexed in Scopus and PubMed, which present solutions for pill or medication dispensers. Given the importance of user acceptance for these solutions, the research questions of the survey are driven by a human-centered perspective. We first provide an overview of the different solutions, classifying them according to their stage of development. We then analyze each solution considering its hardware/software architecture. Finally, we review the characteristics of user interfaces designed for interacting with pill and medication dispensers and analyze the involvement of different types of users in dispenser management. On the basis of this analysis, we draw findings and indications for future research that are aimed to provide insights to healthcare professionals, researchers, and designers who are interested in developing and using pill and medication dispensers.
