Smart Multi-Sensor System for Remote Air Quality Monitoring Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicle and LoRaWAN

Abstract: Deaths caused by respiratory and cardiovascular diseases have increased by 10%. Every year, exposure to high levels of air pollution is the cause of 7 million premature deaths and the loss of healthy years of life. Air pollution is generally caused by the presence of CO, NO2, NH3, SO2, particulate matter PM10 and PM2.5, mainly emitted by economic activities in large metropolitan areas. The problem increases considerably in the absence of national regulations and the design, installation, and maintenance of an … Show more

“…However, this is the topic of extensive investigations by the academic community, and numerous prototype systems have been developed, and trials conducted. Citing one recent example, a Mexican group recently reported the development and testing of a drone-based multi-sensor system that can detect carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, ammonia and PMs, using sensors based on metal oxide/MEMS and electrochemical techniques (Camarillo-Escobedo et al , 2022). The sensing module also measures air temperature, relative humidity and barometric pressure, which can influence the performance of the gas sensors.…”

“…A drone-borne instrumentation for multiple applications was also presented by Camarillo-Escobedo et al [150]. The DJI Mavic Air 2 UAV was equipped with meteorological and gas (NO 2 , NH 3 , CO, SO 2 ), and particulate sensors ( PM 10 and PM 2.5 ) and applied in metropolitan areas and agriculture and livestock zones in Mexico.…”

“…While numerous research articles have been published in networking literature in recent years, very few researchers have addressed the issues of security, energy efficiency, and low-cost design and implementation of LoRa communication systems. For instance, studies [ 1 , 5 , 27 ] focused on cloud-based communications without elaborating on security and energy efficiency aspects.…”

“…LoRa (long-range) communication protocols are the heart of Internet of Things (IoT) applications and connect cloud devices for the real-time monitoring and storage of data for efficiency and productivity purposes. The growing number of IoT sensors makes efficient transmission difficult because of the high-cost infrastructure [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. Emerging LoRa technology can be more attractive for long-distance data transmission than the existing wide area network (WAN) communication systems.…”
