Distributed Energy Resources might have a severe influence on Power Line Communications, as they can generate interfering signals and high frequency emissions or supraharmonics that may cause loss of metering and control data. In this paper, the influence of various energy resources on Narrowband Power Line Communications is described and analyzed through several test measurements performed in a real microgrid. Accordingly, the paper describes the effects on smart metering communications through the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer analysis. Results show that the switching frequency of inverters and the presence of battery chargers are remarkable sources of disturbance in low voltage distribution networks. In this sense, the results presented can contribute to efforts towards standardization and normative of emissions at higher frequencies higher, such as CENELEC EN 50160 and IEC/TS 62749.

The ever-growing demand for electricity and a greater awareness of environmental issues have boosted the use of renewable energy resources within distribution networks. In this context, microgrids have allowed the integration of this type of generation along with an active role of users. Nevertheless, pursuing a massive integration of renewable energy resources under the concept of microgrids requires addressing several issues in advanced metering and communication. This paper presents a comprehensive review which includes both wired and wireless communications. Wired communication is focused on Power Line Communication (PLC), while wireless communication is focused on Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN), emphasizing on Sigfox, LoRa and NB-IoT. Also, the most relevant issues for the implementation of advanced metering in microgrids are presented and explained.

Efficient and Privacy-Preserving Data Aggregation and Dynamic Billing in Smart Grid Metering Networks

Abstract:The smart grid enables convenient data collection between smart meters and operation centers via data concentrators. However, it presents security and privacy issues for the customer. For instance, a malicious data concentrator cannot only use consumption data for malicious purposes but also can reveal life patterns of the customers. Recently, several methods in different groups (e.g., secure data aggregation, etc.) have been proposed to collect the consumption usage in a privacy-preserving manner. Nevertheless, most of the schemes either introduce computational complexities in data aggregation or fail to support privacy-preserving billing against the internal adversaries (e.g., malicious data concentrators). In this paper, we propose an efficient and privacy-preserving data aggregation scheme that supports dynamic billing and provides security against internal adversaries in the smart grid. The proposed scheme actively includes the customer in the registration process, leading to end-to-end secure data aggregation, together with accurate and dynamic billing offering privacy protection. Compared with the related work, the scheme provides a balanced trade-off between security and efficacy (i.e., low communication and computation overhead while providing robust security).
