Smart Intravenous Infusion Dosing System

Abstract: Intravenous (IV) infusion therapy allows the infusion fluid to be inserted directly into the patient’s vein. It is used to place medications directly into the bloodstream or for blood transfusions. The probability that a hospitalized patient will receive some kind of infusion therapy, intravenously, is 60–80%. The paper presents a smart IV infusion dosing system for detection, signaling, and monitoring of liquid in an IV bottle at a remote location. It consists of (i) the sensing and computation layer—a system… Show more

“…Intravenous infusion is a widely used medical technology, which can deliver medications and nutrition directly into a person's vein. [ 15 ] However, at the end of the infusion, there may be blood backflow caused by the venous pressure in the body exceeding the liquid pressure in the infusion tube. If the treatment measures are not timely, the blood backflow will easily lead to the formation of blood clots and cause medical accidents.…”

“…An IV system with a volumetric flow rate (0.05 mL/min) using a capacitive MEMS ultrasound sensor was reported [ 37 ]. Currently, Internet-of-Things (IoT)-enabled drip-monitoring systems have been reported in the literature [ 38 , 39 ].…”
