Smart Electrode Processing for Battery Cost Reduction

Abstract: The intrinsic performance ability of well-designed, high performing battery materials often cannot be utilized on cell level due to production-related losses. Thus, electrode and cell production steps have to be carried out wisely with a lot of process knowledge. Additionally, sophisticated process optimizations allow for significant manufacturing cost reductions. The presented work discloses the impact of slurry processing via continuous extrusion with lowered solvent content on battery manufacturing cost. A… Show more

“…Furthermore, the machine availability plays a significant role as a better machine utilization would allow to install less machines along the whole production line. For the processing parameters, the cathode slurry solids content has the highest impact on the manufacturing cost, which is in good agreement with estimations for conventional LIB production . Hence, replacing the wet coating process by a high‐viscosity extrusion process would result in a significant cost reduction if similar considerations for investment, throughput, and so on, were assumed.…”

“…Post‐drying has been shown to be an important cost factor regarding energy costs in the manufacturing of Li‐ion batteries . In this process, moisture adsorbed from the air as well as residual moisture gets removed from the components of the battery, i.e., the electrode layers as well as the separator.…”

“…In the drying step, the solvent has to be completely removed. Due to the fact that the energy costs contribute up to 37% to the total costs of the primary drying step, a high savings potential is indicated in case of a reduced solvent content …”
