Smart electric vehicle charging infrastructure overview

Abstract: WINSmartEV TM is a smart electric vehicle charging system that has been built and is currently in operation. It is a software and network based EV charging system designed and built around the ideas of intelligent charge scheduling, multiplexing (connecting multiple vehicles to each circuit) and flexibility. This paper gives an overview of this smart charging system with an eye toward its unique features and capabilities.

“…The charging stations form an essential part of the EV reliability scenario in addition to energy utilization. With respect to the present EV market, the major shortcoming is that there are not sufficient charging stations to cater to the need [18][19][20]. This is further aggravated by the fact that the locations of these charging stations are not uniform.…”

“…However, those concepts are not included in the dynamic charge scheduling management facilities based on the vehicle location and SOC [14][15][16][17]. In order to achieve this, the vehicle and charging station communicate with each other for the reservation of slots according to the availability and the cost functions [20]. The progress in EVs in the near future is expected to be high and must be supported with the help of available and future communication systems [23][24][25][26][27].…”

“…The availability of fast chargers is sometimes pointed out as means for reducing range anxiety for people driving low range BEVs, but range anxiety is a complex phenomenon that can be cured in many ways 11 . Studies from Japan show that the presence of chargers make the EV drivers more prone to drive in areas where public (fast) charging is available since the availability reduces the range anxiety 12 . Range anxiety is a complex phenomenon and it can increase as well as decrease with experience, and it can depend on personal traits, as well as be affected by the situation in and outside the EV [3].…”

“…The project was initiated by Viktoria Swedish ICT, a nonprofit research institute, and was running between the years 2009 -2013 13 together with partners from car industry (Volvo Car Corporation), telecom sector (Ericsson) and utility industry (Göteborg Energi). The starting point of the ELVIIS work was to lowering EV barriers by make it simpler for the user to charge and pay for the electricity and at the same time give the energy companies a potential to influence the recharging of EVs, to avoid an unnecessary 12 http://emc-mec.ca/phev/Presentations_en/S12/PHEV09-S12-3_TakafumiAnegawa.pdf 13 The concept was presented the first time for the public in February 2012.…”

“…Range anxiety is the fear of being left on the road with an empty battery where there is no charging station [6], [7] or lack of any CI in which the EVO has registered. Range anxiety can be considered as another impact on market acceptance of EVs [7], [8]. Therefore, availability of public CI is an important factor in penetration of EVs [1], [5], [6], [9].…”
