Smart Earthquake Disaster Prevention System

Abstract: Strong earthquakes can cause buildings to collapse, fires, and jammed doors and elevators. In this study we used the Internet of Things to develop a smart earthquake disaster prevention system. The system continuously monitors the real-time earthquake warning data of the Central Weather Bureau (CWB). When real-time seismic data are updated, the system immediately obtains the intensity and location of the earthquake and calculates the intensity and time of arrival at different locations. When the earthquake is … Show more

“…It can be seen that information acquisition regarding building damage after an earthquake and swift disaster distribution assessment are critical for emergency rescue deployment. (1) In a traditional method, on-site investigation requires a great amount of coordination of human and material resources, and the period of obtaining information is long and the efficiency is low. The investigation is also difficult to carry out because of natural environmental factors such as terrain or disaster factors such as traffic and communication interruptions.…”

“…One example of the application of this technology is the ability to detect earthquakes at home. By utilizing the integration of the IoT in the smart home concept, this connected security system can detect earthquakes quickly and take preventive action [19]. Network-connected sensors allow homes to send alerts and automatically take safety measures such as closing doors and windows, providing additional protection to residents against potential earthquake risks [20].…”
