Smallholder farmers’ willingness to pay for commercial insect-based chicken feed in Kenya

Abstract: The cost of chicken production in developing countries is 300% higher than in developed nations. Overreliance on the key protein feed ingredients especially soybean and fishmeal (SFM) that are characterized by rising food-feed competition and supply chain impediments exacerbate the situation. The use of insect protein as a sustainable alternative protein source has attracted global attention recently. However, there is a dearth of empirical insights on farmers’ preferences for commercial insect-based feed for … Show more

“…The negative effect of household size on WTP for OFSP puree chapati is contrary to the findings of Alemu et al, 24 which showed that households with more members put much emphasis on healthy nutrition. However, this result is consistent with the findings of Mawia Joel 28 that large families were less likely to pay for chicken meat derived from insect-based feeds.…”

“…Income had a significant negative influence on consumer WTP for OFSP puree chapati in both areas. This finding is similar to that of Mawia Joel, 28 who reported a negative effect of income on consumer WTP for chicken meat derived from insect-based feeds. The negative effect of income on WTP for OFSP puree chapati could imply that wealthier consumers do not attach priority to the value addition in their chapati or OFSP since they can afford other alternative sources of vitamin A.…”

“…Factors affecting the price customers are willing to pay for insect-fed chicken meat include income, preference, insect type, market outlets, age, and education level. Gender and household size did not significantly influence the prices participants were willing to pay (Joel, 2018).…”

“…Feed utilisation efficiency is the main objective of breeding strategies to cut costs and maximise production and, subsequently, profits. A study in Kenya revealed that most (93%) participants were willing to pay an average of KES 537.50 for every kilogram of meat produced from insect-fed chicken (Joel, 2018). The difference in willing-topay prices resulted from varying market prices of chicken meat in different counties.…”
