Smallholder adoption of technology: Evidence from the context of climate smart agriculture in South Africa

Abstract: Climate change represents a serious threat to African agriculture, consequently leading to water scarcity and climate variability. These challenges negatively impact agricultural production. Climatesmart Agriculture (CSA) technologies, such as drought-tolerant seed varieties (DTSVs), can provide a solution. However, effective adoption and use of these technologies within smallholder communities is not straight forward. This study investigated the factors determining adoption of CSA technologies by exploring th… Show more

“…Our context focuses on the SHFs within BoP settings. SHFs face major disadvantages including low productivity, higher transaction costs, poor inputs, limited markets access, insufficient finances to purchase the required quantity of inputs, lack of technical know-how and skills and lack of storage and grinding technologies (Blok, Sjauw-Koen-Fa, & Omta, 2013;Kephe, Petja, & Ayisi, 2021;Senyolo, Long, & Omta, 2021a;Senyolo et al, 2021b). These challenges imply a high cost for servicing the SHF segment, with narrow profit margins (Karnani, 2007) or with potential profits only in the future.…”

“…These challenges imply a high cost for servicing the SHF segment, with narrow profit margins (Karnani, 2007) or with potential profits only in the future. Moreover, the imperatives of services such as training, demonstrations and technical support in improving CSATIs' adoption particularly when working with SHFs, have been reiterated (Kephe, Petja, & Ayisi, 2021;Senyolo, Long, & Omta, 2021a;Senyolo et al, 2021b).…”
