Higher education is one of the driving forces of the national economy. Educated human capital is important for the development of Latvia's competitiveness. Over the last twenty years, higher education has become an important market service for international markets, as analysed in several studies. In order to ensure the competitiveness of Latvian higher education in Europe, it is necessary to ensure the attractiveness of universities and studies in Latvia not only for local, but also foreign students, new generation teachers, high-level lecturers and guest lecturers. This, in turn, requires the need to improve the quality of studies and living conditions, creation of temporary accommodation for lecturers and guest lecturers, and the provision of jobspromotion of entrepreneurship. The aim of the study is to analyse the trends of higher education development in Riga, and the problems of affordable, high quality housing. The study analyses the dynamics of the number of students in major Latvian universities, the dynamics of the number of foreign students and the current situation in the field of student hotels, has conducted a survey among students on the availability of housing, quality and preferred housing and environment during studies, summarized the results of the survey, and made conclusions and proposals to improve the current situation in student housing. The study also looks at some good examples of student campus development in Latvia as well as the construction of student dormitories abroad, such as modular wooden houses in England.

Suicidal Ideation of Men with Alcohol Use Disorder in South Korea: A Structural Equation Modeling Analysis

South Korea’s suicide rate has been ranked second among OECD countries, and the rate of suicidal ideation is the highest among men with alcohol use disorder. To test a hypothetical model of men with alcohol use disorder based on O’Connor’s integrated motivational-volitional model, a study was conducted at a psychiatric outpatient clinic, a community addiction management center, and an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting in South Korea, comprising 203 men with alcohol use disorder. Data were collected using the Scale for Suicide Ideation, Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11, Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form, Survey of Recent Life Experiences-Short Form, Defeat Scale and Entrapment Scale. The final model was a good fit to the data (χ2/df = 1.51, comparative fit index = 0.97, normed fit index = 0.92, incremental fit index = 0.97, Tucker–Lewis index = 0.96, and root mean square error of approximation = 0.05). The structural model explained 34.0% of the variance in suicidal ideation; and it validated that impulsivity, stress, defeat, and entrapment were the key factors affecting suicidal ideation. To prevent suicide among men with alcohol use disorder, it is necessary to develop a suicide prevention program that includes men’s feelings of defeat and entrapment.

Integrated Design Process for Modular Construction Projects to Reduce Rework

In modular construction projects, unit production and onsite work are conducted concurrently, enabling shorter duration, lower cost, and improved quality. Because of the nature of the work, building design details should be determined early in the design phase, which requires information from participants. However, the design process for stick-built construction does not include such information, which leads to errors in design, such as omissions and conflicts of information from participants, causing reworking in the design phase. To reduce errors, an information flow should be identified representing when/what/how the information should be shared, and with whom. This paper proposes an integrated design process based on the information flow. To identify the flow, a precedence relationship between activities is represented using a dependency structure matrix (DSM). Then, the order of activities is rearranged using a partitioning algorithm. In this manner, unnecessary feedback and reverse information flow, which are related to errors, are reduced. Finally, the rearranged activities are proposed as an integrated design process. To validate the impact of the proposed process and methodology, interviews with experts were conducted. The validation results suggest that the project delivery method should also be considered in the early project phase in practical application.
