Dysbiosis, characterized by an imbalance in microbial communities, has been observed in diabetic individuals, with decreased microbial diversity and altered abundance of specific taxa such as Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes. These changes are implicated in promoting systemic inflammation, insulin resistance, and metabolic dysfunction. Concurrently, diabetic conditions influence gut barrier integrity and mucosal immunity, leading to histological alterations such as increased intestinal permeability and inflammation. The bidirectional interactions between gut microbiota and host metabolism underscore the potential of targeting the gut microbiome as a therapeutic approach in managing DM and its complications. Further research into the mechanistic links between gut microbiota dysbiosis, histological changes, and metabolic outcomes is crucial for developing targeted interventions to improve diabetic outcomes.
