Following clearcutting, the red-backed vole has been observed to decline immediately (Spires and Bendell, 1983;Martell, 1984;Crête et al, 1995) or initially increase and then decline (Martell and Radvanyi, 1977;Martell, 1983a,b;Clough, 1987;Sekgororoane and Dilworth, 1995;Sullivan et al, 1999;Moses and Boutin, 2001, however, see Kirkland, 1977, 1990Kirkland et al, 1985;Parker, 1989 for a different response). In the study area, red-backed voles reached their greatest abundance in older forest, and their lowest abundance in recent clearcuts (although slightly more red-backed voles were recorded in 0-5-year-old regeneration than 5-10-year-old regeneration).…”
