Small Intracerebral Haemorrhages are Associated with Less Haematoma Expansion and Better Outcomes

Abstract: This study provides observational evidence that very small haematomas are unlikely to expand, by commonly used absolute growth definitions, and may represent a subgroup of patients with intracerebral haemorrhage destined towards good clinical outcomes.

“…Supporting this finding is a prior study demonstrating that smaller initial hematomas (Ͻ10 mL) uncommonly undergo hematoma expansion or experience poor outcome. 17 Furthermore, an association between larger baseline hematoma and contrast extravasation is shown. 6 The high reported specificity in this series may also be the result of the used threshold proposed by Delgado Almandoz et al 7 as a cutoff for spot sign definition.…”

“…Evaluamos los resultados clínicos con el empleo de la escala de Rankin modificada; las puntuaciones se basaron en las revisiones de las historias clínicas 12 realizadas por investigadores que disponían de una certificación de capacitación en el uso de la escala de Rankin modificada. Basándo-nos en lo indicado por estudios anteriores y por ensayos actualmente en curso, definimos la mala evolución clínica como una puntuación de 4 a 6 en la escala de Rankin modificada [7][8][9]13 .…”

“…In the current study, anticoagulant use or an INR > 1.5 was significantly associated with HE (P < 0.001). IVH extension and anticoagulant use are also associated with HE according to several previous studies (11)(12)(13)(14)(15). Moreover, these two variables had been identified as significant predictors of HE in previous studies (4,19,20).…”

“…The time from onset to the initial CT scan has been identified as a consistent predictor of HE in various studies (9,10,(12)(13)(14)(15). HE occurs soon after the onset of ICH, usually within 3-6 h, in approximately 1/4 to 1/3 of patients (10).…”
