Small Habitat Commonality Reduces Human Mars Mission Costs

Abstract: Most view the Apollo Program as expensive. It was. But, a human mission to Mars will be orders of magnitude more difficult and costly. Recently, NASA's Evolvable Mars Campaign (EMC) mapped out a step-wise approach for exploring Mars and the Mars-moon system. It is early in the planning process but because approximately 80% of the total life cycle cost is committed during preliminary design, there is an effort to emphasize cost reduction methods up front. Amongst the options, commonality across small habitat el… Show more

“…The Evolvable Mars Campaign (EMC) is an ongoing series of architectural trade analyses that defines the capabilities and elements needed for a sustainable human presence on the surface of Mars. The point of departure used in EMC was presented at the AIAA SPACE 2015 conference, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 which included the strategy, campaign, architecture, and elements. Beyond the current developments of the Space Launch System (SLS) and Orion, EMC has not discussed the details on the acquisition strategy for any requisite elements.…”
