“…So, what types of actors are found to function as intermediaries? Wilts and Meyer (2005) point to the importance of business interest associations or trade associations especially those representing small firms towards political actors, since small firms in general lack resources "to pursue political strategies independently" (p. 176). They also emphasize that the majority of smaller firms do not interact directly with EU institutions.…”

“…When the search is limited to a combination of "European Union" and "small business" or "small firm(s)", there is considerably less research, and when we combine the three concepts in focus in this study -"political", "European Union" and "small firm" -only five articles are found. Among these five articles, one article of interest is by Hadjikhani and Ghauri (2001), comparing large and small firms' possibilities to exert influence, as well as an article by Wilts and Meyer (2005) about small firms' membership in national trade associations. These are the only ones dealing with issues related to interaction between small firms and political units in the EU.…”

Small-and medium-sized firms, in contrast, are faced with resource constraint that often prohibits them to follow this route (Cook and Barry, 1993;Wilts and Meyer, 2005). A third possibility is that firms hire private lobbyists to carry out the lobbying work.…”

“…The findings in this report suggest that the majority of professional and business trade associations and labor organizations do not disseminate workplace safety and health information to their members All three types of organizations have been shown to be effective intermediaries for reaching their members [Boléat 2003;Cunningham, Sinclair 2015;Wilts, Meyer 2005]. However, these survey results indicate that fewer than half of all labor organizations, 20% of business associations, and 10% of professional associations provide workplace health and safety information to their members.…”
