Small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the maxillary sinus—A case report and nude mouse transplantable model

Abstract: Serum NSE and pro-GRP were useful tumor markers for extrapulmonary SNEC. A SNEC tumor transplantable in nude mice would provide a valuable model for characterization of this lesion.

“…Over the years, SCNEC has been identified by many names including oat cell carcinoma, small cell undifferentiated carcinoma, small cell tumor, neuroendocrine carcinoma, small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma and others . The abbreviations used to identify it are equally numerous—SCNEC, SNEC, SCUC, SCC, SCNC, NEC, and others . This varied nomenclature makes review of the literature of this tumor particularly challenging.…”

“…However, the relationship has not been generally recognized by histopathological examination and previous literature. Noguchi et al [5] have conducted eteroplastic transplantation of the excised tumor tissue in nude mice in order to set up a nude mouse SCNECtransplanting cell line, and to detect the NSE and progastrin releasing peptide (pro-GRP) in the serum, using histopathological and immunohistochemical methods. The results showed that the NSE and pro-GRP in the serum are the available tumor markers for extrapulmonary SCNEC.…”

“…The source of tumor cells in this study was from metastatic lymph nodes of SNEC arising in the right maxillary sinus [14]. Heterotransplantation of tumor tissues was successfully performed into BALB/c nude mice and tumors formed at the inoculated sites were transferred serially at constant intervals.…”

“…Recently, we encountered a case of SNEC arising in the maxillary sinus of a 53-year-old woman, and characterized it histochemically and immunohistochemically. We also reported the establishment of a SNEC tumor line serially transplantable in nude mice [14]. This tumor line expressed neuron-specific enolase (NSE) and neuroendocrine granules were detected in tumor cells in electron microscopy.…”
