Small Berries - Attractive Source Of Bioactive Compounds For Consumers

Abstract: Small berries nowadays start be very popular not only in medicine, pharmacy but also in gastronomy, due to the high amount of biologically active compounds and pleasant sensory characteristic. These kinds of fruits is rich for natural colorants, flavonoids, phenolic acids, vitamins and mineral compounds. Aim of this study was to investigate the biological activity (antioxidant activity, natural colorants, polyphenols and flavonoids) of selected kind of small berry fruits -acai, goji, schisandra, mulberry and s… Show more

“…The presence of carotenoids in S. chinensis has not been studied in detail before. Our results suggest that carotenoids comprise a relatively small fraction of the Omija extract, agreeing with Ivanišová et al [ 35 ] who state that the concentration of carotenoids in S. chinensis was lower in comparison to sea buckthorn or goji. As such, we may hypothesize that the biological activity of S. chinensis may not be attributed to tetraterpenoids.…”

“…The biochemical assessment of the Omija extract revealed that the berry is a rich source of phytochemicals, particularly phenolic compounds, complementing the findings by Ivanišová et al [ 35 ]. Mocan et al [ 36 ] elected a similar experimental approach to assess the general composition of S. chinensis leaves and fruits.…”

“…Herbal preparations are used as an alternative source of medicines to mitigate the diseases associated with oxidative stress (Priya and Nethaji, 2015). The free-radical scavenging activity of the extracts was evaluated using the widely used 2,2-diphenyl-1picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) test (Sheng et al, 2011;Mocan et al, 2014;Ivanišová et al, 2017;Vergun et al, 2018Grygorieva et al, 2020;Shelepova et al, 2020;Tvrdá et al, 2020;Mňahončaková et al, Vinogradova et al, 2021). The DPPH assay provides an easy and fast mode to estimate antioxidant activity.…”

“…Medicinal herbs are used due to their health benefits, special aroma, taste and are considered one of the richest sources of bioactive compounds (Shanayda and Korablova, 2015;Shymanska et al, 2018;Mňahončáková et al, 2019;Ivanišová et al, 2017Ivanišová et al, , 2020. The commercial development of plants as sources of antioxidants to enhance health and food Effect of alginite in the form of ALGEX r 6 preparation on the biomass formation and antioxidant activity of some medicinal plants preservation is of current interest (Rice-Evans et al, 1997).…”
