Slurry Titrations of Unstabilized Cellulose Nitrate

Abstract

Slurry titrations were performed on unstabilized cotton and wood cellulose nitrates. The results for total sulphate were compared with those from gravimetric, 24-hour, and zero hydrolysis methods. The agreement was best in the case of wood cellulose nitrates. The ester sulphate contents obtained were also compared with those from 24-hour and zero hydrolysis. The agreement was again best in the case of wood cellulose nitrates. It was shown that slurry titration for the determination of sulphate acid ester could be used for wood cellulose nitrates containing not less than 100% sulphate ester, the error being −2.7 to −11.9%. For cotton cellulose nitrates, the results were not satisfactory.
