The present study investigated the erosion wear behavior of WC-Ni and WC-Cr 3 C 2 -Ni cermet coatings deposited by high velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) spray process on the substrate of 1Cr18Ni9Ti stainless steel. Microstructures and morphologies of the coatings were examined using SEM images, and x-ray diffractometer was used to analyze the phase composition of the powder and the coatings. The erosion test was carried out using home-made jet rig. In order to better fit the research background of this study, the erodent used for erosion was taken from the Yellow River, China. The coating is well combined with the substrate; and WC-Cr 3 C 2 -Ni coating consists of WC, Cr 3 C 2 and Ni phases, WC-Ni coating consists of WC, W 2 C and Ni phases. Some mechanical properties of the two coatings were compared, WC-Cr 3 C 2 -Ni coatings have higher hardness to be compared with WC-Ni ones due to a lower binder content; and the elasticity modulus and nano-hardness values of the WC-Cr 3 C 2 -Ni coating are higher than that of the WC-Ni coating. The relationship between the wear performance of the coatings and impingement angle was obtained; and the erosion resistance of the coatings was analyzed. It was observed that WC-Cr 3 C 2 -Ni cermet coating exhibits higher erosion resistance under all testing conditions as compared with the WC-Ni cermet coating and 1Cr18Ni9Ti stainless steel. The results show that the erosion mechanism at low angle is mainly cutting, while erosion pits dominate at high angle for the coatings, moreover, plastic deformation could be observed in the case of the binder depletion and cracking found place. and the erosion mechanisms of the 1Cr18Ni9Ti stainless steel are mainly cutting and plastic deformation at low angle and high angle, respectively.

The degradation of materials due to slurry erosion is the serious problem which occurs in the power industries. The paper presents actual knowledge about an influence of individual factors connected with flow conditions, particles and material properties on the slurry erosion resistance. Among the factors connected with operating conditions, an influence of impact angle, and velocity of impact, particle concertation and liquid temperature have been described. In case of the factors connected with solid particle properties, an influence of the size, shape and hardness have been discussed. In the part devoted to the impact of material properties, due to different types of materials, the issues of resistance to erosion of slurries related to the properties of steel, ceramics and polymers are discussed separately. In the paper has been shown that a change of any of mentioned factors causes a change in the erosion rate due to the synergistic effects that accompany to slurry degradation.

The problem of failure for elbows and pipes due to the effects of solid particles flow with a high velocity, facing a lot of industrial foundations now days. This work investigated factors that cause failure by mechanical wear inside elbows and pipes of cement transportation which manufacturing from low carbon steel (St-52-3) and find out a method for reducing this mechanical wear. Coating with layers of nanoparticles of tungsten carbides (WC) using a thermal spray process with a high-velocity oxy-fuel technique (HVOF) is one of those methods. The coating process was done for samples from the same material of elbow and pipe material. Some tests were done for these samples with different coating thicknesses (30, 40, and 50 µm) by placing them inside the elbow as well as standard wear tests (pin on disc). The results showed a decrease in the mechanical wear for the sample coated with 50 µm of WC layer by 71% compared with that without coating, while the results of the pin on disc test showed a decrease in wear about 97% for the sample coated with 50 µm. The photographs of the scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used to determine the thickness of the coating layer on samples. The numerical simulation was also implemented to simulate the erosion profile inside the elbow by using the commercial code STAR CCM + based on the CFD technique; the predicted results showed a good agreement with the experimental data with accuracy reaches 94%.
