The main objective of this work is to study the mechanical characteristics and the chemical degradation of mortars and concretes made obtained by substituting the cement by the machining sludge. Several materials were carried out by substituting the cement with different amount of machining sludge (5, 10, 15 and 20%). The obtained materials are compared to those without substitution (ie: 00wt% of machining sludge). Mechanical and physical properties of the two materials (mortars and concretes) as flexural and compressive strengths were studied. Physical properties as shrinkage, the bloating effect, loss in mass, slump concretes and porosity were evaluated. In addition, chemical degradation is studied for the conservation of these concretes and mortars from machining sludge in different aggressive environment. Moreover, the addition of 5wt% of the machining sludge in the mixture of the mortar and the concretes seems to be interesting.

Septic tank sludge is regularly hauled to the Montreal Urban Community (MUC) wastewater treatment plant. It is then discharged and mixed with the wastewater inflow before entering the primary chemical treatment process. An ecotoxicological procedure integrating chemical and toxicological analyses has been recently developed and applied to screen for the illicit discharge of toxic substances in septic sludge. The toxicity tests used were the Microtox, the bacterial-respiration, and the lettuce (Lactuca sativa) root elongation tests. In order to validate the applicability of the proposed procedure, a two-year interlaboratory study was carried out. In general, the results obtained by two independent laboratories (MUC and the Centre d'expertise en analyse environnementale du Quebec) were comparable and reproducible. Some differences were found using the Microtox test. Organic (e.g., phenol and formaldehyde) and inorganic (e.g., nickel and cyanide) spiked septic sludge were detected with good reliability and high efficiency. The relative efficiency to detect spiked substances was > 70% and confirms the results of previous studies. In addition, the respiration test was the most efficient toxicological tool to detect spiked substances, whereas the Microtox was the least efficient (< 15%). Efficiencies to detect spiked contaminants were also similar for both laboratories. These results support previous data presented earlier and contribute to the validation of the ecotoxicological procedure used by the MUC to screen toxicity in septic sludge.

Sludge is one of the by-products of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). To assist biological processes, part of the produced sludge is returned to the treatment process and the excess is removed from the treatment plant whereby it undergoes thickening and dewatering. Numerous studies have been conducted to investigate the effect of different coagulants on dewatering from sludge, but the effect of using divalent iron for this purpose has not been investigated so far. In this research, the effect of divalent and trivalent iron compounds (ferrous sulfate and ferric chloride) on the dewatering of excess sludge of the first module of the Bojnourd WWTP (Iran) has been investigated. In this regard, first, the effect of different doses of each coagulant to optimize the dewatering characteristics of sludge was investigated and then the effect of pH change by adding lime was investigated. The results showed that the addition of optimal doses of FeSO4 (0.6 and 0.4 g/l) and lime (0.664 and 1.5866 g/l) reduced the capillary suction time of sludge by 30.6 and 32.7%, respectively, while reducing the moisture content of sludge cake by 26 and 30.6%.
