Slowing BMI Growth Trajectories in Elementary School-Aged Children

Abstract: This project examines the Northeast Iowa Food and Fitness Initiative, a policy-, community-, and school-based effort to slow children's body mass index (BMI) growth over 6 years. Kindergarteners (K) to fifth graders (5) from 10 different school districts participated (N = 4101). Students with 0 to 1 years of initiative exposure showed greater growth in BMI compared with children who had 2 to 6 years of exposure, resulting in K-5 BMI savings of 1.5 points (6 lb) for median-height boys and girls. Results suggest… Show more

“…Six studies [4146] estimated the cost and health benefits of city-wide, and state and national policies aimed at preventing future weight gain and obesity (Table 5). Kuo and colleagues [41] developed a simulation model estimating the impact on annual weight gain in Los Angeles (LA) County of a California menu law mandating large restaurant chains to display the caloric content of menu items.…”

“…There were no statistically significant changes in the percent of overweight (Wald χ 2 = .50, P = .48) or obese (Wald χ 2 = 1.71, P = . 19) in all children in the study between years 1 and 2 in HS. Changes in percentage of children categorized as overweight (Wald χ 2 = 1.98, P = .85) or obese (Wald χ 2 = 2.18, P = .82) between the initial and follow-up measurements did not vary significantly by study year.…”

“…stress tolerance) demonstrated only weak and inconsistent linkages with physical inactivity throughout childhood. Given the significance of the decline in physical activity among middle school students, several school-based stroke education and physical health intervention programs have adopted traditional didactic health promotion strategies among elementary students (Saint-Maurice et al, 2017; Tarro et al, 2017; Toussaint et al, 2017) and middle school students (Brick et al, 2017; Frydman and Mayor, 2017; Jamerson et al, 2017) (Erfle and Gamble, 2015; Grydeland et al, 2013; Herscovici et al, 2013; Lazorick et al, 2015; Marcus et al, 2013). Whether these strategies successfully helped learners to increase or improve learned information in the short or long term is not fully understood.…”
