Slow Quenches in the Band Insulator Described by the Su–Schrieffer–Heeger Model

Abstract: The topological properties of the 1D Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model undergoing a slow quench between different topological regimes are studied. Because of dynamically induced breaking of chiral symmetry, the winding number becomes ill defined. It is also demonstrated that its natural generalization based on projections of the band pseudospins onto the plane is not conserved.
