“…The slipping rib syndrome is an unusual but not rare cause of thoracic and abdominal pain in children, requiring clinical suspicion for diagnosis. Physical examination may reveal a positive ‘hooking manoeuvre’ (11), a reproduction of the pain event induced by the examiner curving his/her fingers under the costal margin and gently pulling superiorly and anteriorly, inducing subluxation of the offending cartilage. Although the ‘hooking manoeuvre’ can confirm clinical suspicion, children often are too fearful of the pain to relax their abdominal muscles sufficiently for the examiner to perform this test.…”

“…Other common differentials diagnoses for musculoskeletalrelated chest pain include thoracic spine pain, costovertebral joint pain, costochondritis, costosternal syndrome, sternalis syndrome, Tietze syndrome, rib-tip syndrome, and xiphoidalgia. [24][25][26][27][28][29][30] Musculoskeletal chest pain originates from the bony and soft tissue structures of the chest wall. 11 Functionally, the chest wall is a complex system that provides rigid protection to the vital organs and stability to the arm and shoulder, and offers flexibility to aid in respiration.…”

“…The pain starts acutely and remains intermittently for minutes with a sharp and stabbing quality; afterwards, the pain is usually described as a dull ache that in some cases can be confused with angina [ 62 ] . The diagnosis is clinical and based on the hooking maneuver that consists in curving the fi ngers of the examiner under the affected costal margin pulling gently the rib cage forward and upward, which will reproduce the pain and cause a characteristic "click" [ 63 ] . The treatment requires local anesthetic injections or blockage of the intercostal nerve.…”
