Slightly polar secondary metabolites from the far-eastern brown alga Dictyota dichotoma

Abstract: The brown alga Dictyota dichotoma is well-known as a source of terpenoids with bactericidal, antifungal, insectidical, antitumor, and antiviral activity. Secondary metabolites from populations of this alga growing near the shores of Japan, Australia, India, Pakistan, Greece, Italy, and Spain have been previously studied. It has been shown that the terpenoid composition depends on the collection site [1]. Nevertheless, the chemical composition of the Russian population of D. dichotoma inhabiting the northwest s… Show more

“…The compound was subsequently re-isolated from two independent specimens of Dictyota dichotoma, in the former instance showing an algicidal effect on Heterosigma akashiwo and Karenia mikimotoi. In addition, a moderate effect against the dinoflagelate Alexandrium catenella was observed [120,122]. The compound was reisolated from Dilophus ligulatus and displayed cytotoxic effects against P-388 and KB cells in the single-digit-g/mL range while the IC50 value against NSCLC-N6-L16 was 0.3 g/mL [119].…”

“…Xenicane 89 was later re-isolated from Dilophus ligulatus and was found to exert weak cytotoxic effects against P-388 leukemia, KB human nasopharynx carcinoma and NSCLC-N6-L16 human lung carcinoma cells (IC50 values around 20 g/mL) [119] 7 . Dilopholide (90) was obtained from both Dilophus ligulatus and Dictyota dichotoma and it has been reported to exhibit antiproliferative activity against KB, NSCLC-N6, and P-388 cells with IC50 values < 4 g/mL [26,120]. Nordictyotalide (91) embodies a closely related congener of 88 and 90, from which it is distinct by the lack of C19.…”
