Sliding Wear Behavior of Al2O3–TiO2 Coatings Fabricated by the Suspension Plasma Spraying Technique

Abstract: Abstract:In this study, friction and dry sliding wear behavior of alumina and alumina-titania nearnanometric coatings have been studied. Coatings were obtained by Suspension Plasma Spraying (SPS) technique. Dry sliding wear tests were performed in an a tribometer with a ball on disk configuration, using a Al2O3 ball as a counterpart with a normal load of 2N, a sliding distance of 1200m and a sliding speed of 0.1 m/s. The influence of TiO2 addition in fabricated coatings was related with friction coefficient be… Show more

“…Improving the quality of Al 2 O 3 coatings is of special interest because of its exceptional wear resistance properties [26][27][28]. In this sense, researchers are focusing their attention to find the experimental SPS conditions to obtain denser alumina coatings while maintaining the nanostructure.…”

“…In the case of APS Al 2 O 3 coating, the addition of nano-sized YSZ has been to reduce the friction coefficient of the coating [30]. Apart from the use of YSZ material, the addition of TiO 2 has also been shown to reduce the friction coefficient of Al 2 O 3 suspension based coating [41].…”

“…Manufacturing ceramic coatings with high wear-, corrosionresistance is important for many industrial processing applications [2,3]. As a mature technology, thermal spraying process has been widely used to deposit ceramic coatings on different metals, such as steels [4,5,6], irons [7], aluminium alloys [8], superalloys [9] to protect the substrate from wear [10,11], corrosion [12], thermal fatigue [13] and cavitation erosion [14] for a long service life. Oxide ceramics, due to their excellent properties including high hardness, high chemical inertness [13,14] in a variety of aggressive environments [15], and good wear resistance, are promising candidates as corrosion-resistant coatings in industrial applications, although there are some inevitable defects in the coatings [16,17].…”
