SLeuthing Tuberculous Cough

Abstract: Cough, a hallmark of tuberculosis, transmits the disease. Ruhl et al. find that a Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb)-specific lipid, SL-1, stimulates human nociceptive neurons and makes guinea pigs cough. Mtb extract, but not SL-1, also stimulates non-nociceptive neurons that participate in the cough reflex, suggesting additional cough-inducing mechanisms.
