Sleeve Gastrectomy and Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Lead to Comparable Changes in Body Composition after Adjustment for Initial Body Mass Index

Abstract: Excess weight loss is highly influenced by the initial BMI. Total weight loss seems to be a better measurement tool abolishing initial weight differences. SG and RYGB do not differ in terms of body composition and weight loss 1 year after surgery.

“…Consistent with other studies, our results reflect significant improvements in the anthropometric variables in obese patients after LSG [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12]. Moreover, our study confirms that LSG induced a substantial improvement in several glucose parameters.…”

“…However, its effects are limited in time, and weight regain is a common complication in bariatric patients, mainly after restrictive procedures. In the literature, a dramatic increase in %EWL in the first months after surgery as well as a reduction of the FFM have been described 17 . Afterwards, weight loss slows down, until a point of maximum weight loss is reached between 12 and 24 months after surgery 3,5 .…”

“…Bariatric surgery mediates changes to adipose depots, contributing to its effectiveness in treating obesity and its comorbidities [37,38]. Both RYGB and VSG result in comparable, significant loss of fat mass [39][40][41][42][43][44]. One recent study found that both decreases in visceral fat and subcutaneous fat tissue density are sustained one year following RYGB surgery [45].…”
