Sleeping With the Enemy? The Current Knowledge of Piscine Orthoreovirus (PRV) Immune Response Elicited to Counteract Infection

Abstract: Piscine orthoreovirus (PRV) is a virus in the genus Orthoreovirus of the Reoviridae family, first described in 2010 associated with Heart and Skeletal Muscle Inflammation (HSMI) in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Three phases of PRV infection have been described, the early entry and dissemination, the acute dissemination phase, and the persistence phase. Depending on the PRV genotype and the host, infection can last for life. Mechanisms of immune response to PRV infection have been just beginning to be studied … Show more

“…CD8A , as one of the CD8 molecular chains, is also involved in the immune response. In PRV-infected fish, high levels of CD8A , CD8B , and granzyme-A were found, suggesting that they have a positive regulatory effect on the CTL-mediated immune response [ 56 ].…”

“…PRV is the etiological agent of heart and skeletal muscle inflammation (HSMI) disease in Salmo salar , also known as Atlantic Salmon, as well as HSMI-like and circulatory disorders in other salmonid species such as Oncorhynchus kisutch and Oncorhynchus mykiss , also known as coho salmon and rainbow trout, respectively. The prevalence of PRV in farmed salmon during their time at sea exceeds 80% and mortality ranges from moderate to high, significantly affecting fish health and production [ 4 , 5 ].…”

“…The replication cycle of PRV begins with its entry into erythrocytes, facilitated by the interaction between the endosomal membrane and the outer viral capsid proteins, although the cell-specific receptors involved remain unknown [ 5 ]. In erythrocytes, viral replication peaks occur within the first four weeks of infection.…”
