Sleep quality under mild hypoxia in men with low hypoxic ventilatory response

Abstract: The present study evaluated whether slow-wave sleep and whole-night delta power of the non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) decrease during sleep at a simulated altitude of 2000 m, and whether such changes related to measures of hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR). This study consisted of two parts; in the first, HVR was measured in 41 subjects and each seven subjects with the lowest or the highest HVR were selected for the subsequent sleep study. In the second part, polysomnogram, art… Show more

“… 69 Due to the nature of both their training and competition, athletes are exposed to several additional risk factors that may alter sleep patterns and induce sleep deprivation. For instance, environmental factors that influence sleep include traveling across different time zones, 70 training in heat, 60 conditions that lead to hypoxia, 71 , 72 and psychological issues derived from competition stress. 73 …”

“…For improvement of cardio-respiratory system's functions, perfection of motor skills as well as for therapeutic effect special techniques are introduced in physical education, sports and rehabilitation. Such techniques create hypoxia condition in organism, increase effectiveness of physical exercises [4,7,12,[14][15][16][17]. Regarding the above mentioned, we combined aqua-fitness program with methodic of endogenous-hypoxic breathing (EHB) with the help of Endogenic -01" device (G.I.…”

“…The neocortical neuronal discharges influence hippocampal network activity via the entorhinal input (Sirota et al, 2003), thereby presumably producing diverse patterns in the hippocampal delta waves of sleep in altered O 2 conditions. According to previous results on hypoxia, an O 2 concentration slightly lower than the physiological condition causes an increase in the delta wave activity (Pappenheimer, 1977;Hamrahi et al, 2001;Hoshikawa et al, 2014;Hencz et al, 2023). Our results suggest that the reduction of frequency in slow waves under hyperoxia is related to the secondary effects of O 2 that may affect cerebral metabolism.…”
