Sleep quality in rheumatoid arthritis, and its association with disease activity in a Korean population

Abstract: Background/AimsThe aim of this study was to compare the sleep quality between rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients and healthy controls; and to evaluate the relationship between RA disease activity and sleep quality in Korea.MethodsA total of 130 RA patients and 67 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were enrolled in a comparative study of sleep quality using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Age, gender, concomitant medication, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, serum C-reactive protein, Beck Depression… Show more

“…Our study has shown poor-sleep patients had significantly higher levels of disease activity compared with good-sleep patients. Importantly, logistic regression analysis indicated that disease activity is a major contributor to sleep quality, which is consistent with previous studies from Turkey and Korea [4, 27]. Additionally, the ESR was found to be associated with sleep quality in our study, which was in line with prior research reports [4].…”

“…It has been reported that several factors of demographic, clinical and psychogenic variables have an influence on sleep quality [2729]. In our study, patients with a PSQI score ≥5 were found to have significantly more frequently use synthetic DMARDs.…”

“…Previous studies used the PSQI as a sleep instrument tool for patients with RA, along with use of confirmatory factor analysis. 5,32,35 The JSS-TR had a moderate to strong correlation with most of the subsets of the NHP and the PSQI. The strongest one was with the NHP emotional reactions and pain subsets.…”

“…Previous case-control studies in this regard with healthy controls have reported similar results. 3,20 Sleep disturbances in RA tend to be multifactorial. Beyond pain, there appears to be a complex and dynamic interplay between the clinical aspects of RA and sleep quality.…”
