Sleep duration, positive attitude toward life, and academic achievement: The role of daytime tiredness, behavioral persistence, and school start times

Abstract: Sleep timing undergoes profound changes during adolescence, often resulting in inadequate sleep duration. The present study examines the relationship of sleep duration with positive attitude toward life and academic achievement in a sample of 2716 adolescents in Switzerland (mean age: 15.4 years, SD = 0.8), and whether this relationship is mediated by increased daytime tiredness and lower self‐discipline/behavioral persistence. Further, we address the question whether adolescents who start school modestly late… Show more

“…The quality of evidence was downgraded from low to very low for this study design because of a serious risk of bias (sleep duration was self-reported with no psychometric properties reported) and serious imprecision (only 1 study was published so the risk of imprecision is high). Both cross-sectional studies (Do et al 2013;Perkinson-Gloor et al 2013) reported better quality of life and well-being with longer sleep duration. The quality of evidence was downgraded from low to very low because of a serious risk of bias (both studies relied on self-reported sleep with no psychometric properties reported).…”

“…From an empirical point of view, former contributions indeed found a positive relation between sleep quality and/or sleep duration and academic performance. Many studies report a positive association between opportune sleep habits and beneficial primary and secondary schooling outcomes such as reading, math and spatial ability test scores and school grades (see, e.g., Bruni et al, 2006;Dewald et al, 2010;Kelly et al, 2013;Meijer, 2008;Perkinson-Gloor, 2013;Short et al, 2013;Stea et al, 2014).…”

“…We note that tiredness is a common phenomenon that most adults and children experience occasionally and may well affect some individuals often and adversely during their education or employment (e.g. Oginska & Pokorski, 2006;Perkinson-Gloor, Lemola, & Grob, 2013;Perkinson-gloor et al, 2015). Hence, it is likely that cues to tiredness, such as eyelidopenness and subtle frowning will affect attributions and quite possibly expectations of performance.…”
