Sleep and the Young Athlete

Abstract: Context: Sleep plays a vital role in cognitive and physical performance. Teenage athletes (ages 13-19 years) are considered especially at risk for disordered sleep and associated negative cognitive, physical, and psychosomatic effects. However, there is a paucity of evidence-based recommendations to promote sleep quality and quantity in athletes who fall within this age range. “…This is due to sleep deficiencies, which have a negative impact on health and are linked to increases in all-cause mortality and disease risk [43]. Sleep deprivation (an insufficient sleep duration compared to the basal level) and disturbances (the inability to initiate and/or maintain the sleep-cycle) are also risk factors for adverse health, recovery, and injury risk in athletic populations [39,40,[44][45][46][47][48].…”

This study brought up the different states that sleep has and why it is so important to respect the limits of the body and rest.…”

“…Recently, as scientific evidence on the effects of athletes' sleep on physical and mental recovery and performance is increasing, the importance of sleep management through its measurement and evaluation is simultaneously increasing [4,13,14]. Undoubtedly, sleep evaluation questionnaires for athletes can provide a more accurate diagnosis and evaluation than those for non-athletes.…”
