Slc39a5-mediated zinc homeostasis plays an essential role in venous angiogenesis in zebrafish

Abstract: Angiogenesis is a precise process mediated by a variety of signals and the environmental niche. Although the essential trace element zinc and its homeostasis are essential for maintaining proper cellular functions, whether zinc plays a role in angiogenesis is currently unknown. Using zebrafish embryos as a model system, we found that zinc treatment significantly increased the expression of the slc39a5 gene, which encodes the zinc transporter Slc39a5. Moreover, knocking down … Show more

“…During zebrafish angiogenesis, new vessels that arise from axial veins and dorsal aortas form a primitive circulatory loop ( 53 , 54 ). At 26–32 hpf, the posterior axial vein stretches ventrally and ultimately forms a “honeycomb-like” network named the CVP at 38 hpf.…”

“…Although studies have shown that zinc ions not only affect the mineralization of osteoblasts by participating in the formation of bone salt ( Nagata and Lonnerdal, 2011 ) but also promote migration of vascular endothelial cells and maintained proliferation; the growth and active states of apoptotic balance promoted skeletal remodeling ( Pan et al, 2020 ; Xia et al, 2020 ) and suggested that a significant pathway for zinc ion promotion of bone regeneration may stem from blood vessel development in the bone. Other questions to consider is how do zinc ions affect angiogenesis and mineralization in vitro ?…”

“…SLC39A5, located at 12q13.3, encodes zinc transporter (Xia et al, 2020). A heterozygous truncation mutation in the SLC39A5 gene p.Y47 * was first reported in 2014 (Guo et al, 2014).…”
