Chronic wounds in diabetes undergo a lifetime risk of developing into diabetic foot ulcers. Oxygen is crucial to wound healing by regulating cell proliferation, migration, and neovascularization. However, current oxygen therapies, including hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) and topical gaseous oxygen (TGO), mainly employ gaseous oxygen delivery, which is much less effective in penetrating the skin. Here, we introduce an oxygen-producing patch, made of living microalgae hydrogel, which can produce dissolved oxygen. The superior performance of the patch that results from its dissolved oxygen delivery is >100-fold much more efficient than TGO penetrating the skin. Further experiments indicate that the patch could promote cell proliferation, migration, and tube formation in vitro, and improve chronic wound healing and the survival of skin grafts in diabetic mice. We believe that the microalgae-gel patch can provide continuous dissolved oxygen to improve chronic wound healing.

The bane of a thermal insult is its further progression from a partial thickness to a full thickness injury. Although complex, this phenomenon is orchestrated primarily through the union of unabated inflammation and inadequate tissue perfusion synergizing to effect further cellular destruction and necrosis. Several local and systemic factors have been implicated in this delayed assault on the wound, chief among them are desiccation, ischemia and infection. Understanding the pathogenesis and identifying causative agents would help prevent this process from transpiring, impacting not only treatment decisions but morbidity as well. We present such a case within this context, suggesting that the combination of a desiccating agent (benzalkonium chloride) and smoking resulted in the near total conversion of a deep mixed dermal burn. Furthermore, the author feels that a recently developed oxygen delivering hydrogel (Ozeion) could not only have prevented this condition from progressing but was instrumental in its subsequent reversion, as well as the timely reconstitution of the burnt skin's surface.

Introduction. Drinking water is a necessary element of life support of the population. Many studies conducted around the world have established a relationship between the quality of drinking water and public health. On the basis of the Perm State Medical University studies were conducted to assess the effects of oxygen-enriched drinking water on human respiratory, cardiovascular and nervous systems as well as serum erythropoietin (EPO) levels. The objects of study were 32 volunteers (7 men and 25 women) aged 18 to 28. The purpose of the research was to study the effect of oxygen-enriched drinking water on the basic physiological systems of the human body and serum EPO levels of healthy volunteers. Methods. We applied the following research methods: physiological methods were used thrice (on the first, tenth and twenty-first days) to test the cardiovascular (heart rate, SBP, DBP, Kerdo index, Harvard step test), respiratory (BH, JELL, JEL, Stange and Gencha tests) and nervous (Anfimov test, SAN test, ShAS test) systems; laboratory tests of serum EPO levels in venous blood of the volunteers; and statistical methods (statistical processing was performed using Microsoft Office Excel 2007 and STATISTICA V. 7 software package (StatSoft Inc., USA). Results. The use of oxygenated water helps increase functional and reserve capabilities of the basic physiological systems of the body and improve tissue oxygenation.
