Skin neoplasms of dogs in Sydney

Abstract: In a survey of dogs in Sydney, mastocytomas (16.1%) and histiocytomas (14.0%) were the most common in a total of 1,000 skin neoplasms. The basal cell and appendage group provided 25.5% of the neoplasms. The prevalence of the various neoplasms, the age of affected dogs, the proportion in the sexes, the common sites of occurrence and prevalence in the different breeds were broadly similar to findings in surveys in other countries, except that in the Syndeny dogs there was a greater prevalence of histiocytomas an… Show more

“…In our investigation, with the help of antibodies "LP34" (negative reaction), one melanocytoma, which had a similar morphology to melanoacanthoma, was confirmed. The majority of researchers reported that canine melanocytic tumors were common and accounted for from 5% to 7% of all canine skin tumors (6,16,26). The lower prevalence of melanocytic tumors in our investigation (2.0%) might have been influenced by the fact that histologically identified tumors were classified as other tumors of similar morphology.…”

“…The MCTs were the most commonly observed but in different proportions, 51.2% (88/172) by IHC versus 62.2% (107/172) by histology. The high prevalence of MCTs was expected because this neoplasm represents 7% to 21% of all skin tumours (Rothwell et al 1987, Yager & Wilcock 1994. The frequency of CL diagnosed by IHC was 1.8 times higher (21.5%, 37/172) compared to histology (12.2%, 21/172).…”

“…MCTs are one of the most common neoplasms in dogs, comprising 7% to 21% of all skin tumours (Rothwell et al 1987, Yager & Wilcock 1994. These tumours are routinely graded for malignancy, based on histomorphological characteristics (Patnaik et al 1984).…”

“…Os neoplasmas cutâneos e subcutâneos são descritos como os mais comuns em cães, representando cerca de um terço de todos os tumores encontrados nesta espécie (Rothwell et al 1987, Guzman 2003, Bellei et al 2006. As formas mais comuns de diagnóstico de tumores de pele são as técnicas citopatológica e histopatológica.…”
