Skin care for the newborn

Abstract: Skin of the newborn differs from that of an adult in several ways. It is more susceptible to trauma and infection and requires special care. Certain principles of skin care have to be emphasized to the mother or caregiver such as gentle cleansing, adequate hydration and moisturization of the skin, preventing friction and maceration in body folds, and protection from irritants and bright sunlight. The initial bath in full term infants can be given once the baby's temperature has stabilized and the infant is hem… Show more

“…This type of dermatitis occurs due to increased temperature and humidity through diaper use, which leads to maceration of the skin, leaving it vulnerable to irritation caused by contact with feces and urine (3) . Some of the most common risk factors for developing dermatitis are frequent bowel movements, the use of antibiotics, and malabsorption; constant evaluation contributes to early detection and proper treatment (10) .…”

“…At birth, the stratum corneum of newborn children resembles that of adults, with adherent cells, while in preterm infants there are few layers of stratum corneum and the cells are thinner and less compact (2)(3) . In both preterm and newborn children the dermis has fewer elastic fibres, and the dermal-epidermal junction is poor and has high permeability due to a higher body surface area to weight ratio.…”

“…1,[13][14] In relation to the use of soap, it was agreed that neutral soap should be used with caution in the first bath, undertaking a careful light wash of the NB, and that, in the other baths, above all in the neonatal period (until the 28 th day), soap should not be used. [15][16] It was agreed that the technique for undertaking the bath would be that of the humanized Japanese bath, encouraging the participation of the parents in this procedure. [17][18] In the third workshop, it was agreed that the NB, if born in good clinical conditions, should be dried delicately with warmed sheets and that a little hat should cover his scalp; that the mother and NB should be covered with a blanket to warm them, and that the NB should remain there in skin-to-skin contact with the mother for one hour to promote breast-feeding and the bond, any type of intervention being avoided in this period.…”
