Skin and fur bacterial diversity and community structure on American southwestern bats: effects of habitat, geography and bat traits

Abstract: Microorganisms that reside on and in mammals, such as bats, have the potential to influence their host’s health and to provide defenses against invading pathogens. However, we have little understanding of the skin and fur bacterial microbiota on bats, or factors that influence the structure of these communities. “…Most studies were performed using Illumina next generation sequencing (targeting the v3-v4 region) (De Mandal et al 2015, Avena et al 2016, Lemieux-Labonté et al 2016, Dietrich et al 2017, Dietrich and Markotter 2019). We chose multi-primer bacterial 16S™ Metagenomics for this study because it targets altogether 7 different hypervariable regions of the 16S rRNA gene (in comparison to previous studies where one or two regions were targeted, such as V1, V2 (Winter et al 2017), V3 and/ or V4 region (Lemieux-Labonté et al 2016, Wilkinson et al 2016).
