Skill acquisition as a function of age, hand and task difficulty: Interactions between cognition and action

Abstract: Some activities can be meaningfully dichotomised as ‘cognitive’ or ‘sensorimotor’ in nature—but many cannot. This has radical implications for understanding activity limitation in disability. For example, older adults take longer to learn the serial order of a complex sequence but also exhibit slower, more variable and inaccurate motor performance. So is their impaired skill acquisition a cognitive or motor deficit? We modelled sequence learning as a process involving a limited capacity buffer (working memory)… Show more

“…At this point, it is worth considering why distinct surgical specialties seem to possess core features. Surgery is a complex task where the complexity reflects the integration of both cognitive and sensorimotor processes [27]. In terms of the cognitive processes involved, all surgeons require high-level medical knowledge to make the appropriate assessment and evidence-based decisions.…”

“…making a cup of tea requires someone to remember the sequence of events that result in a palatable hot beverage but also relies on the motor ability that results in the requisite actions unfolding across space and time). The Cognition Action Interaction Theory [37] suggests that these somewhat different systems (i.e. motor and higher-order cognition) are intrinsically intertwined and impact on one another.…”

“…Especially that Project Score offers a variety of activities beyond reading, learners, teachers and other stakeholders would have opportunities to practice and improve or enhance their skills. Accordingly, one can attain improvement in skill if one can observe well and understand the interaction between the skill and the cognitive necessities (Raw et al 2019). Skill Acquisition is another category the teacher-respondents considered as an opportunity for the participants.…”
