Skeletal Muscle Depletion Predicts the Prognosis of Patients with Advanced Pancreatic Cancer Undergoing Palliative Chemotherapy, Independent of Body Mass Index

Abstract: IntroductionBody composition has emerged as a prognostic factor in cancer patients. We investigated whether sarcopenia at diagnosis and loss of skeletal muscle during palliative chemotherapy were associated with survival in patients with pancreatic cancer.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed the clinical outcomes of pancreatic cancer patients receiving palliative chemotherapy between 2003 and 2010. The cross-sectional area of skeletal muscle at L3 by computed tomography was analyzed with Rapidia 3D software. We … Show more

“…Our cut-off values of L3 SMI were much lower than those reported by Prado et al [9] (52.4 cm 2 /m 2 for men and 38.5 cm 2 /m 2 for women). However, the cut-offs in our study are comparable to the Korean cut-offs reported by Choi et al [21] (42.2 cm 2 /m 2 for men and 33.9 cm 2 /m 2 for women). These differences seem to be due to the physical differences between Westerners and Asians.…”

“…However, as aforementioned, few reports have addressed this important clinical question in patients with unresectable APC who are receiving systemic chemotherapy (24,25). The present study was, therefore, conducted.…”

“…However, to the best of our knowledge, there are few reports regarding the impact of DSMM on survival in patients with unresectable APC undergoing systemic chemotherapy (24,25). Therefore, it is imperative to address these issues.…”

“…8385 More recently, it has been linked to higher chemotherapy toxicity rates and hospitalizations during treatment for patients with metastatic breast and pancreatic cancer. 86,87 This treatment-related frailty has been associated with worse physical performance measures over the course of treatment and higher risk for falls in this patient population. Exercise-based interventions may offset some of the impact of this decline.…”
