A field experiment was conducted in 2010-2012 on a private farm located in the village of Frankamionka in the administrative district (powiat) of Zamość, on brown soil with slightly acidic pH, and the average abundance of zinc and iron. The experiment was set up in a random split-plot design with four replications, with seven methods for controlling weed infestation: 1) no weeding control, 2) hand weeding control, 3) linuron (Afalon dyspersyjny 450 SC), 4) linuron + metribuzin (Afalon dyspersyjny 450 SC + Mistral 70 WG), 5) linuron + chlomazone (Harrier 295 ZC), 6) linuron + chlomazone + metribuzin (Harrier 295 ZC + Mistral 70 WG), 7) bentazon (Basagran 480 SL twice). The objective of the study was to determine the effect of weeding control methods on the content of iron and zinc in the seeds of cv. Jaś Karłowy common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). The highest seed yield, on average 29.39 dt ha-1 , was obtained on the plots where weeds were controlled by the application of the herbicides Harrier 295 ZC + Mistral 20 WG just after sowing. The lowest seed yield was harvested on unweeded plots-6.77 dt ha-1 on average. Statistical analysis showed a significant effect of the weed control methods and the weather conditions in growing seasons on the content of iron and zinc in bean seeds. The lowest amount of zinc, an average of 36.11 mg kg-1 , was found in beans from unweeded plots. The use of the herbicides Afalon dyspersyjny 450 SC + Mistral 70 WG, Harrier 295 ZC and Harrier 295 ZC + Mistral 70 WG significantly increased the zinc content compared to the un weeded control and manual weeding. The highest iron concentration, on average 75.12 mg kg-1 , was observed in seeds from unweeded plots. Significantly less iron accumulated in beans from plots weeded manually and by application of the herbicides Harrier 295 ZC and Harrier 295 ZC + Mistral 70 WG.

This work aims to discriminate among different species of the genus Cistus, using seed parameters and following the scientific plant names included as accepted in The Plant List. Also, the intraspecific phenotypic differentiation of C. creticus, through comparison with three subspecies (C. creticus subsp. creticus, C. c. subsp. eriocephalus and C. c. subsp. corsicus), as well as the interpopulation variability among five C. creticus subsp. eriocephalus populations was evaluated. Seed mean weight and 137 morphocolorimetric quantitative variables, describing shape, size, colour and textural seed traits, were measured using image analysis techniques. Measured data were analysed applying step-wise linear discriminant analysis. An overall cross-validated classification performance of 80.6% was recorded at species level. With regard to C. creticus, as case study, percentages of correct discrimination of 96.7% and 99.6% were achieved at intraspecific and interpopulation levels, respectively. In this classification model, the relevance of the colorimetric and textural descriptive features was highlighted, as well as the seed mean weight, which was the most discriminant feature at specific and intraspecific level. These achievements proved the ability of the image analysis system as highly diagnostic for systematic purposes and confirm that seeds in the genus Cistus have important diagnostic value.

Seed size and shape analysis of registered common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivars in Turkey using digital photography

In this study, the size and shape properties of twelve different bean cultivars (eleven varieties and a genotype) were determined using image processing method on digital photography and the cultivars were grouped depending on their properties. The highest mean values of geometric diameter, projected area, length, width and shape factor in the study were determined in the 'Çayırlı' genotype. 'Terzibaba' cultivar, more spherical shape at width orientation compared to other cultivars, had the lowest value of thickness (4.6 mm) and more circular at the width orientation among the cultivars. The highest mean of thickness (6.0 mm) were measured in 'Elkoca-05' and 'Noyanbey-98' cultivars. The sphericity mean of 'Karacaşehir-90' (70%) was found higher than those of the other cultivars, while the geometric mean diameter, projected area, length and width values had the lowest mean. 'Yunus-90' and 'Göynük-98' cultivars had the lowest sphericity mean values of 58.9% and 58.7%, respectively. According to the results of Principal Component Analysis (PCA), the most important variables of the first component were mass, geometric mean diameter, surface area, volume, projected area, equivalent diameter, perimeter and length. According to the physical properties of bean cultivars 'Aras-98', 'Elkoca-05', 'Göynük-98', 'Noyanbey-98', 'Yakutiye-98' and 'Yunus-90' were oblongus; 'Karacaşehir-90' and 'Önceler-98' were ellipticus; 'Akman-98', 'Kantar-05' and 'Terzibaba' were subcompressus and 'Çayırlı' genotype was compressus. The size and shape features of the bean cultivars are considerably crucial parameters in terms of designing the seed metering mechanism of seed drills, and transportation, separating and sizing systems. So, the size and shape data of bean cultivars are of mostly importance to engineers, machine manufacturers and machine designers.
