Size of Human Figure Drawing and Goodenough-Harris Scores of Pediatric Oncology Patients: A Pilot Study

Abstract: Human figure drawings of 12 pediatric oncology patients were significantly smaller in height, width, and area than were drawings of 12 school children and 12 pediatric general surgery patients paired for sex and age. The Goodenough-Harris scores of the cancer patients' drawings were also significantly lower than those of both school and general surgery groups. It is hypothesized that anxiety, lowered self-esteem, and the effects of chemotherapy contributed to these findings.

“…Painful procedures increase anxiety in children (3), and there are studies where drawings have been used to assess children's anxiety. Anxious or fearful children have been shown to draw smaller pictures than nonanxious children (4, 5), and children have been shown to draw younger children when experiencing distress (6). There is also some evidence that anxiety affects the placement of the figures in drawings (7).…”

“…In this study drawings were used to measure children's anxiety in a specific, anxiety‐provoking situation of having an ear operation. The method of scoring the drawings consisted of assessing features that according to the literature would be affected by anxiety or distress (4–7, 10).…”

“…For example, aside from their potential use to assess mental maturity, human figure drawings have been used for the assessment of perceptual-motor functions and emotional issues in both children and nonverbal adults (Kay, 1978;Laosa et al, 1973;Menks, 1973;Platzer, 1976). Human figure drawings can also be used projectively to explore body image and personality status (Culp, Packard, & Humphry, 1980;Paine, Alves, & Tubino, 1985;Pope-Grattan, Burnett, & Wolfe, 1976;Zucker, Finegan, Doering, & Bradley, 1983). In addition, they can be used to facilitate understanding and communication among family members or to assess intervention effects (Culp et al, 1980;Worden, 1985).…”

“…Situações de stress e ansiedade vêm sendo avaliadas também pelo Desenho da Figura Humana (DFH). Com a escala Goodenough-Harris de avaliação do DFH em crianças com câncer, constatou-se significativa redução na altura, largura e área em relação aos desenhos de crianças em escolas e pacientes de cirurgia geral, o que foi atribuído em parte à ansiedade (Paine, Alves & Tubino, 1985).…”
