This field study elaborates the role of grass swale in the management of stormwater in an urban parking lot. Grass swale was constructed by using different vegetations and local soil media in the parking lot of Mapu-gu Seoul, Korea. In this study, rainfall runoff was first retained in soil and the vegetation layers of the grass swale, and then infiltrated rainwater was collected with the help of underground perforated pipe, and passed to an underground storage trench. In this way, grass swale detained a large amount of rainwater for a longer period of time and delayed peak discharge. In this field study, various real storm events were monitored and the research results were analyzed to evaluate the performance of grass swale for managing rainfall runoff in an urban area. From the analysis of field experiments, grass swale showed the significant rainfall runoff retention in different rain events. Grass swale markedly reduced total rainfall runoff volume and peak flow during the small storm events of intensity about 30 mm/h. From the analysis, on average rainfall runoff retention from the grass swale was found around 40 to 75% during the various small rain events. From the results, we can say that grass swale is a stormwater mitigation practice which can help avoid flash flooding problems in urban areas.

Oil and Grease (O&G) pollution in urban stormwater runoff is an important issue especially for tropical country with high intense and frequent storms. Monitoring of O&G pollution is comparably more difficult than other conventional constituents due to the requirement of manual grab sampling technique. Thus, this paper was aimed to investigate the O&G quality and quantify an appropriate sampling time for collecting sample that approximating Event Mean Concentration (EMC) of O&G (EMC O&G ) from residential, commercial and industrial catchments. An average of 16 storm events was collected from each land use in order to assess the quality of O&G in stormwater runoff. A series of stormwater samples were manually grabbed by sampling personnel along with the storm flow measurements. Results showed that industrial catchment always exhibited the highest EMC O&G value, followed by commercial and residential catchments. Correlation analysis indicated that EMC O&G was correlated well with EMCs of NO 3 -N, NH 3 -N, TP and SP in the commercial catchment. The EMC O&G was also found to be independent of all storm characteristics, except for storm duration in the industrial catchment. Results obtained from this study suggested that the mean sampling times for collecting EMC O&G sample (TEMC O&G ) at residential, commercial and industrial catchments are 17, 17 and 20 minutes, respectively. The TEMC O&G had mostly preceded the peak flow by a time-based ratio of 0.70. Thus, this best time sampling strategy can be implemented based on forecasting rainfall and estimated time to peak flow at catchment outlet.

Road Pavement, Road Pollution, and Sustainability under Climate Change Increased Temperature

This paper presents a multidisciplinary approach to understand the impacts of temperature increase on the retention of particulate pollutants, such as heavy metals and microplastics, by the road pavement material. A soil with a particle size distribution similar to road dust was selected. A Wheel Tracking device was used to assess the permanent deformation behavior of prismatic specimens and the retention of the dust, at controlled temperatures of 40 °C and 60 °C, likely to occur on pavement in the future. The soil representing road pollutants was placed at the top of the slabs prior to the Wheel Tracking Test (WTT), based on the European Standard EN 12697-22:2020. After the WTT, two common methods were used, in order to evaluate the soil retention (pollution accumulation) on road pavement. The results confirm that the viscoelastic behavior of bituminous mixtures under increased temperatures can contribute to particle retention at the pavement. Future studies are needed to understand the phenomena, the retention characteristics by different bituminous mixtures, and the efficiency of pollutants capture. The work opens the opportunity to develop innovative road pavement bituminous mixtures that can reduce the discharge of road particulate pollutants, and have increased resilience and sustainability in extreme weather conditions.
