Size distributions and settling velocities of suspended particles from road and highway

Abstract: Characterization of particles from road runoff is very important for the selection of Best Management Practice (BMP) in the stormwater management. In this study, runoff samples during two rainfall events at four sites in Gyunggio-Do were collected and Particle Size Distributions (PSD) in the size range of 2-880 µm were determined. Then number and mass fraction of each size range was obtained from a total of 89 samples. Also, rainfall amount, flow rate, and other pollutants in samples were analyzed. Particles w… Show more

“…After promulgation of the Special Law on Waterfront Development for Low Impact Development (LID) applications [ 4 ], the Korean government had started active work on the LID projects to make cities more sustainable and more resilient to the effects of climate change. The Korean government has adopted the concept of water cycle cities [ 4 , 30 ] for application of new innovative design LID practices such as green roofs, blue roofs, rain gardens, grass swales [ 31 , 32 , 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 ], etc. in Korea.…”

“…Grass swale application in this experiment was also the part of that project. Until now, there have been very few studies [ 27 , 37 ] done to evaluate the performance of the grass swale system for stormwater management in Korea. Therefore, this field study was carried out to check the grass swale performance for stormwater management in a highly urbanized area of Seoul.…”

“…Thus, the pollutant mass is exhausted to be flushed by runoff for storm with longer duration. Yun et al (2010) also found that partial EMC of particle had showed inverse relationship with accumulated rainfall and sharply decreased at the early stage of rainfall. Negative correlations were observed between TEMC O&G and storm characteristics at all catchments, except for R Dur and ADD in industrial catchment.…”

“…The removal of solids and particulate pollutants are among the operations targeted in these treatment systems. Yun et al [50] indicate that around 80% of highway particles are <0.05 mm. Kayhanian et al [51] report the difference between particles found at the road pavement surface and the ones that are likely to be washed out by rainfall events (smaller fractions).…”
