For drug delivery, characterization of liposomes regarding size, particle number concentrations, occurrence of low-sized liposome artefacts and drug encapsulation are of importance to understand their pharmacodynamic properties. In our study, we aimed to demonstrate the applicability of nano Electrospray Gas-Phase Electrophoretic Mobility Molecular Analyser (nES GEMMA) as a suitable technique for analyzing these parameters. We measured number-based particle concentrations, identified differences in size between nominally identical liposomal samples, and detected the presence of low-diameter material which yielded bimodal particle size distributions. Subsequently, we compared these findings to dynamic light scattering (DLS) data and results from light scattering experiments coupled to Asymmetric Flow-Field Flow Fractionation (AF4), the latter improving the detectability of smaller particles in polydisperse samples due to a size separation step prior detection. However, the bimodal size distribution could not be detected due to method inherent limitations. In contrast, cryo transmission electron microscopy corroborated nES GEMMA results. Hence, gas-phase electrophoresis proved to be a versatile tool for liposome characterization as it could analyze both vesicle size and size distribution. Finally, a correlation of nES GEMMA results with cell viability experiments was carried out to demonstrate the importance of liposome batch-to-batch control as low-sized sample components possibly impact cell viability.

This study investigated the relationship between variations in the size distribution and the specific surface area of SiO2 nanoparticles and the in(stability) and rheology of their colloidal dispersions and their resulting silica-poly(acrylamide) hybrids. Thus, SiO2 nanoparticles with size distribution in the range 40-173 nm, corresponding to 70-26 m2/g of specific surface area, were used in the studies. The results show a correlation between the average particle size distribution/the specific surface area of silica nanoparticles with the in(stability) and the rheology of their dispersions, such that an increase in the particle size distribution from 40 to 173 nm corresponds to a decrease in dispersion instability index from 0.913 to 0.112. However, in the silica-poly(acrylamide) hybrids, a change in the particle size distribution from 40 to 173 nm corresponds to an increase in the nanofluid instability index from 0.1913 to 0.929. In the hybrid materials, interactions between polymer chains and nanoparticles lead to size-induced stability and rheological behaviour, such that the broadening of the FTIR peak around 1,000 cm-1 in the nanohybrids was related to an Si-O-H bending vibration that arose because of dominating hydrogen bonding arising from the interaction of the hydroxyl groups and the amide groups in the polymer. The rheological characteristics of the hybrid nanofluids show that the relative viscosity and shear sensitivity of the colloidal dispersions or their hybrids can be tailored by the average particle size distribution of the nanoparticles.

Low risk posed by engineered and incidental nanoparticles in drinking water

Natural nanoparticles (NNPs) in rivers, lakes, oceans and ground water predate humans, but engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) are emerging as potential pollutants due to increasing regulatory and public perception concerns. This Review contrasts the sources, composition and potential occurrence of NNPs (for example, two-dimensional clays, multifunctional viruses and metal oxides) and ENPs in surface water, after centralized drinking water treatment, and in tap water. While analytical detection challenges exist, ENPs are currently orders of magnitude less common than NNPs in waters that flow into drinking water treatment plants. Because such plants are designed to remove small-sized NNPs, they are also very good at removing ENPs. Consequently, ENP concentrations in tap water are extremely low and pose low risk during ingestion. However, after leaving drinking water treatment plants, corrosion by-products released from distribution pipes or in-home premise plumbing can release incidental nanoparticles into tap water. The occurrence and toxicity of incidental nanoparticles, rather than ENPs, should therefore be the focus of future research.
