An analysis of 12 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in PM 2.5 (particulate matter with a diameter smaller than 2.5 microns) samples collected at Yucheng, Shandong, in June 2013 was conducted to determine the concentrations, composition, sources, and associated cancer risk. The results revealed that the average PAH concentration was higher during haze episodes (28.28±8.35 ng m −3 ) when compared to non-haze episodes (23.68±4.17 ng m −3 ), and diagnostic ratio and principal component analyses indicate that the predominant sources of PAHs were from fossil fuel and coal combustion, likely from vehicle emissions and industrial sources and biomass burning. Coal combustion and biomass burning contributed significantly more during haze episodes, whereas liquid fossil fuel combustion (e.g. petroleum) was the dominant contributor during the non-haze periods. In addition, back-trajectory calculations revealed that the long-distance transport of air masses from regions with industrial pollution and biomass burning contributed significantly to the concentrations of PAHs in the region. The concentration of high molecular weight PAHs (HMW-PAHs) increased from 62.3 % under non-haze conditions to 67.9 % during the haze periods. The benzo[a]pyrene-equivalent carcinogenic potency value during haze episodes was higher (7.09 ng m −3 ) than that during non-haze (5.64 ng m −3 ) periods and adults over 30 years old in the Shandong province are at an increased risk of cancer from PAHs.

This study explored the sources of PM 10 in the smoke haze during the traditional burning season in northern Thailand by determining the characteristics of the atomic elements in PM 10 compared to known plant samples. The ambient air was collected from two sites (urban and peri-urban) in the Chiang MaiLamphun Basin. This was compared to the characteristics of the leaves from eight agricultural and forest plants predominant in the region: bamboo, grass, teak, yangna, corn, longan, lychee, and rice that were collected and burned in a combustion chamber to collect the resultant PM 10 . The elements -Al, Si, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, and Fe -were analyzed by PIXE, SEM-EDS, and μ-SXRF. Morphologies of PM 10 particles were analyzed by SEM. The concentrations of the elements in the PM 10 of the ambient air samples correlated highly with the PM 10 from the combustion of teak, yangna, and corn leaves. The results of principal component analysis (PCA), correlations, and morphological characteristics analyzed by SEM also showed that the ambient air PM 10 belonged to the same group as the PM 10 from combustion of teak, yangna, and corn. A HYSPLIT trajectory model indicated that the ambient air PM 10 in the Chiang Mai -Lamphun Basin was derived primarily from hotspots on the Thai-Myanmar border driven by southwest winds, as well as some hotspots in the basin itself. This study has shown that open burning of plant sources, both forest and agricultural, particularly along the Thai-Myanmar border to the southwest, is a primary source of the smoke haze in the Chiang Mai -Lamphun Basin during the dry season.

Several congeners of Cl, Br-PAHs in haze air were reported for the first time.• Cl, Br-PAH levels in heating period were higher than that in non-heating period. • Coal combustion contributes to the elevated levels of Cl, Br-PAHs in heating period.Editor: Jay Gan Profiles, sources and potential exposures of chlorinated and brominated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (ClPAHs and BrPAHs) in haze associated atmosphere remain unclear. Haze events happened frequently during heating period in Beijing provided a typical urban context to investigate the concentrations, profiles, sources and potential exposures of ClPAHs, BrPAHs and their non-halogenated parent compounds (PAHs) in air samples. Average concentrations of PAHs, ClPAHs and BrPAHs during heating periods (with more frequent haze events) were about 3-9 times higher than during non-heating periods. Concentrations of particulate matter (PM)-associated ClPAHs and BrPAHs were higher in heating period than in non-heating period, while for gas-associated ClPAHs and BrPAHs, this distinction was not significant. Congener patterns and congener profiles indicated that with increasing coal combustion during the heating period, concentrations of PAHs and ClPAHs in air were elevated in comparison to the non-heating period. Inhalation of PM-associated PAHs, ClPAHs and BrPAHs accounted for higher exposure than inhalation of gas phase and dermal contact of both gas phase and particulate phase. In this study we found that the particulate phase is the dominant exposure pathway of atmospheric PAHs, ClPAHs and BrPAHs during haze days, which is different from previous studies.
