“…Our measured sum of the 12 PAHs during the haze period was comparable to that measured in Taiwan (33.0 ng m −3 for 21 PAHs) in 2010 during the rice straw burning period (Lai et al 2009). The concentration of particulate PAHs during haze episodes in our study were found to be higher than several other rural and suburban sites, such as the Muang District in the Lampang province in Northern Thailand (5.1 ng m −3 for 16 PAHs) and Araraquara in Brazil (11.6 ng m −3 for 16 PAHs) (Phoothiwut et al 2013;De Andrade et al 2010). However, the concentration was lower than the measured values in Baofeng Country, Henan province (34.82 ng m −3 for 16 PAHs) (Wu et al 2015).…”

“…Several studies of PM 10 sources in northern Thailand have been reported (Kim Oanh et al, 2011;Phoothiwut and Junyapoon, 2013), but they have focused on the rice straw burning season that occurs in December/January after the rice harvest every year, in contrast to the smoke/haze during the dry season burning in February to March studied here. To the best of our knowledge, our study is the first of its kind to identify the types of plants that were burnt and contributed to airborne PM 10 in the Chiang Mai -Lamphun Basin during the smoke/haze season.…”

“…A number of studies have assessed atmospheric PAHs as to their sources, concentrations in air, distributions in particles of different sizes and lung cancer risk Jia et al, 2011;Phoothiwut and Junyapoon, 2013;Zhang et al, 2009). PAH derivatives, such as chlorinated or brominated PAHs (ClPAHs or BrPAHs) have attracted attention only recently.…”
