Size at Sexual Maturity of the Female Pool Barb, Puntius sophore (Cyprinidae) in the Old Brahmaputra River, North Eastern Bangladesh

Abstract: The size at sexual maturity of the female Puntius sophore was estimated in the Old Brahmaputra river, North eastern Bangladesh, using direct observation of sexual characters (e.g., gonadosomatic index) and by the indirect way using relative growth. Monthly samples were collected using a combination of fine-meshed cast nets and seine nets. All specimens were sexed and Standard Length (SL), Fork Length (FL), Body Weight (BW) and Gonadal Weight (GW) of all female individuals was measured. The gonadosomatic index … Show more

“…The Brahmaputra River, originates in the Chemayung-Dung glacier, is one of the largest rivers in the world; with its basin covering areas in China, India and Bangladesh (Ahmed 2015). The total length of the river from its source in southwestern Tibet to the mouth in the Bay of Bengal is about 2,850 km; including Padma and Meghna rivers up to the mouth (Ahmed 2015).…”

“…Size at sexual maturity is widely used as an indicator for minimum permissible capture size, and is very crucial for fisheries management (Ahamed & Ohtomi, ; Ahamed, Ahmed, Hossain, & Ohtomi, ; Hossain et al, ; Lucifora, Valero, & Garcia, ). In the present study, the size at sexual maturity of A. bato was estimated as 4.9 cm SL on the basis of SL‐GSI and SL‐DI relationships.…”
