Abstract: This succinct history of NAMES: A Journal of Onomastics discusses its founding in Detroit, Michigan, December 29 1951 and the subsequent creation and publication of its academic journal NAMES in 1953. It provides an enumeration of the Society’s founders and officers, the contents of the first issue, and a listing of famous and frequent contributors to the journal.
